FIELDS OF EXPERTISE

Juncao (Jun meaning fungi, Cao meaning grass) means herbaceous plant that can be used as the culture substrate for cultivation of edible and medicinal fungi, developed by Professor Lin Zhanxi and the National Engineering Research Centre for Juncao Technology of the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University (FAFU) of China. Juncao Technology refers to techniques that utilize Juncao as medium or raw material, through the decomposition, promotion and symbiosis of fungi, to produce mushroom, functional food, feed, fertilizer, biomass energy, biological materials and to apply in environmental protection.

Summary of Projects and Achievements

1. Technology transfer: Capacity of developing countries to achieve sustainable agriculture are enhanced through the transfer of Juncao technology for alleviating poverty and promoting productive employment. Technology transfer projects are implemented in Central African Republic, Nigeria, Madagascar, Tanzania, Laos, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, monitored by the UN DESA, and funded by the UN Peace and Development Trust Fund.

2.Training: Juncao technology has been successfully transferred to a number of developing countries, including Fiji, Rwanda, Lesotho and Papua New Guinea. By 2021, the Center has held 268 international training sessions on Juncao technology in country and abroad. Participants included 10,478 experts, technicians, researchers and government officials from 104 countries.

Major SSTC Projects

1.China-Rwanda Agriculture Technology Demonstration Center

Duration: 2011-2014, totally 3 years.

Location: Rwanda

Activities: carry out the technical cooperation in Juncao mushroom cultivation, soil and water conservation and rice production, to train local technicians and farmers, and to provide related materials such as laboratory equipment and consumable items, and mushroom cultivation and processing machines.

Results: a Juncao industry was established in Rwanda, which significantly contributed to poverty alleviation, employment creation and environment rehabilitation.

Highlights: Many are keen on learning the technologies. They all paid high tributes to the effectiveness and successes of this Chinese Government's economic aid Project. Hon. Dr. Agnes Kalibata, Rwanda Minister of Agriculture presented the "Best Show Award" to the booth of C-RATDC on Jun. 7th, 2011. She said:“ We really appreciate what is doing. So I think that it's going to bridge the gap between technology transfer, the technology from China that we don't have here. The means of the ways that reaching to farmer is so new, so the technology transfer the knowledge to reach farmer is something we really appreciate.”

The center has contributed towards addressing the community's needs and help farmers increasing productivity to lift themselves out of poverty, Prime Minister Dr Pierre Damien Habumuremyi thanked the Chinese government for supporting Rwandan farmers in the quest for better living conditions.

2. China-Aid Juncao Technology and Dryland Rice Technical Project in Papua New Guinea

Duration: 2019-2022, totally 3 years.

Location: Papua New Guinea

Activities: carry out adaptability research, breeding, production, demonstration, processing, training & education, extension and marketing in the technical fields of Juncao technology and dryland rice, and provide equipment and materials.

Results: More than 600 mushroom farmers and rice farmers in Eastern Highland province, which significantly contributed to poverty alleviation, food security and employment creation.

3. China-Fiji Juncao Technology Demonstration Center project

Duration: 2014-2020, totally 5 years

Location: Fiji

Activities: An edible and medicinal mushroom production line with an annual output of 300 tons of fresh mushrooms was completed and put into operation. 12 edible and medicinal mushroom varieties have been successfully planted. A total of 39 technical training courses were held and 1,704 people trained. There are more than 600 Juncao mushroom growers. 2 Demonstration Villages of Juncao mushrooms were established. Juncao grass eased the shortage of green fodder during the dry season and promoted the development of animal husbandry. More than 500 ha Juncao grass were planted by about 1,000 livestock farmers, which reduces the mortality of cattle and sheep in the dry season.

Results: Juncao Technology not only provides high-protein foods, but also effectively alleviates the shortage of forage which promotes the development of animal husbandry, and improves the living standards of farmers.

Highlights: In 2019, the Ministry of Agriculture of Fiji announced “optimizing the use of Juncao grass to enhance livestock production” as one of the five initiatives. Local livestock companies like Yaqara Pastoral Co., Ltd. have planted Juncao grass as green fodder for the dry season. “Fiji Mushroom Growers Association” was established by Fiji Women farmers. Local small and micro Juncao business owners emerged from the demonstration households. Minister Fiaz Keya issued the “Fiji Organic Product Certificate” to the center which is the first foreign project in Fiji to receive this honor.

4. China-Aid Juncao Technology Project in Lesotho

Duration: 2007-2021, totally 9 years.

Location: Lesotho

Activities: The Sino-Lesotho Juncao Technology Demonstration Base with total area of 10,000m2 has been established at Masianoken, Maseru, Lesotho. The base held various kinds of training courses and trained more than 3200 participants in Lesotho. There had about 810 households cultivating mushroom. 16 Juncao technology flagship sites were set up in Lesotho.

Results: a preliminary Juncao industry was established in Lesotho, which significantly contributed to poverty alleviation, employment creation and environment rehabilitation.

Highlights: In an interview with CRI Online, Mahala Molapo, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security of Lesotho, said that the (Juncao Technology) cooperation project that China and Lesotho are carrying out not only helps us achieve the specific goals for the current stage, but also lays the foundation for Lesotho to fully realize the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and eliminate all forms of poverty. The United Nations 2030 Agenda is highly compatible with China’s “One Belt One Road” initiative, and both call for cooperation between different countries to achieve common development and universal prosperity.
