FIELDS OF EXPERTISE

The center is the first research institute specialized in hybrid rice development both at home and abroad. It is breeding-oriented and its main activities cover:

  • Breeding new hybrid rice combinations with high yield, good quality and multiple resistances
  • Conducting basic and applied research on the mechanism of heterosis in rice, distant heterosis utilization, rice molecular technology and transgenic technology
  • Studying the technology for multiplication and purification of parental lines and production
  • Studying the technology for high-yielding cultivation of hybrid rice
  • Promoting the demonstration and commercialization of hybrid rice
  • Collecting and evaluating genetic resources of hybrid rice
  • Evaluating the seed purity of parental lines and rice hybrids
  • Testing and analyzing rice grain quality
  • Conducting international training and development of hybrid rice technology

Set up platforms

Africa Branch of China National Hybrid Rice R & D Center was set up in 2019.

Hybrid Rice development in Madagascar

Totally 30000ha hybrid rice was developed from 2008 to 2018, and more than 90000 ton rice increased.

5 hybrid rice varieties was released in Madagascar.

Local hybrid rice Seed production technology package has been developed.

Training of hybrid rice technology

Since 2014, Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center has organized 13 training programs on hybrid rice technology in South Asian and African countries, which benefited more than 300 trainees. Exemplary training courses include:

  1. 2015 Training Course on Hybrid Rice Breeding Technology for South Asian Countries, benefited 15 participants from Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.

  2. 2016 Training Course on Hybrid Rice Production Technology for APEC Members along 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, benefited 19 participants from Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Peru

  3. 2017 Training Course on Rice Planting Technology for Developing Countries, benefited 28 participants from Mongolia, Thailand, Egypt, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, South Sudan, Surinam, and Panama

Workshop /seminar /symposium

Since 2014, Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center has organized 9 seminars/ workshops/forums on hybrid rice development and South-South Cooperation. Major ones include:

  1. 2017 Seminar on Paddy Rice Planting and Management for Asian Countries

  2. 2018 Ministerial forum on Global South-South Cooperation in Agriculture

  3. 2019 Tenth Anniversary of the FAO- China South-South Cooperation Programme and Future Perspectives for South-South and Triangle Cooperation
