FIELDS OF EXPERTISE

China National Bamboo Research Center (CBRC) is a national bamboo research institute and an important platform for forestry convention implementation. It has three missions, i.e., bamboo R&D, international training and cooperation, and bamboo industrialization. With 3 ministerial/provincial research platforms and 4 field experimental stations, it tackles some pivotal and common issues in bamboo cultivation, high-value processing and integrated utilization. CBRC maintains good cooperation with over 30 countries and trains around 4,500 persons from 111 developing countries.

Summary of Projects and Achievements

1. Platforms establishment:

International Forestry Science and Technology Training Center (IFSTTC), National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China founded in 2011; International Training Base for CITES Management Authority of China set up in 2016; International Training Base for International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) set up in 2017.

2.Bamboo industry development in Rwanda:

From 2009 to 2019, 4 elite bamboo species were introduced to Rwanda and 25 bamboo nurseries and 3 bamboo processing lines were set up, more than 100 types of bamboo products were manufactured which has built up a preliminary bamboo industry with a total production value of USD 4 million.

3. Forest technology training:

Since 1993, CBRC has implemented 117 bamboo technology-training courses both in China and overseas. Around 4,000 participants worldwide have been well trained in English, French and Spanish languages. Exemplary training courses include:

  1. 2017 Overseas Training Course on Bamboo Cultivation, Processing, Utilization and Trade in Costa Rica (in Spanish), benefited 30 participants in Costa Rica.
  2. 2018 Training Course on Bamboo Cultivation and Processing Technology for French-speaking Countries in Africa (in French), benefited 43 participants from Algeria, Cameroon, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Madagascar and Guinea.
  3. 2019 Seminar on High Value-added Bamboo Application for ITTO Member Countries (in English), benefited 29 participants from India, Pakistan, Myanmar, Laos, Fiji, Tanzania, Kenya, Brazil, Peru and Cuba.

4. Workshops/seminars

In addition, CBRC has implemented nearly 30 workshops/seminars in other forestry fields and at technical, official and ministerial levels, including wildlife conservation, wetland protection, nature reserve management and timber security. Some examples are as follows.

  1. 2016 Ministerial Seminar on Forestry Industry among Developing Countries, benefited 21 participants from Myanmar, Malaysia, South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Malawi, Swaziland and Vanuatu.
  2. 2017 Training Seminar on Asia CITES Implementation and Wildlife Conservation, benefited 40 participants from Bahrain, Mongolia, Malaysia, Nepal, Laos, Thailand and Sri Lanka.
  3. 2019 Training Workshop on Wetland Conservation and Management Technology in Uganda, benefited 45 participants in Uganda.

Major SSTC Projects

1. China Aid Rwanda Bamboo Plantation and Utilization Project funded by Ministry of Commerce of China.

Duration: 2009-2019, totally 5 phases.

Location: Rwanda

Activities: introduced elite bamboo species, built 25 bamboo nurseries, manufactured 100+ types of bamboo products, and explored local market.

Results: a preliminary bamboo industry was established in Rwanda, which significantly contributed to poverty alleviation, employment creation and environment rehabilitation.

Highlights: Prime Minister of Rwanda and several ministerial officials visited CBRC’s station in Kigali and spoke highly of this project. It was selected as a model and broadcast in CCTV news channel in 2015 to support the activity which Chinese President, Xi Jinping co-chaired World Women Summit in the United Nations. Mr. Yuan Jiajun, then Governor of Zhejiang Province, visited the station in 2019 and conferred it “Demonstrative Cooperation Base for Zhejiang Aid Rwanda Bamboo Technology”. In 2020, this project was selected as one of the “Good Practices in South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Development” by United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation.

2. China Aid Uganda Bamboo Processing and Utilization Project funded by Ministry of Industry of Uganda.

Duration: 2002-2006

Location: Uganda

Activities: imported machinery from China; transferred bamboo processing technology to Uganda; trained local technicians and fostered bamboo market in Uganda.

Results: Bamboo processing line was established and in full operation. A preliminary bamboo industry came into being, which contributed to poverty alleviation and provided job opportunities.

Highlights: Ugandan president visited the bamboo project station twice and acclaimed it loudly.

3. Value-added Bamboo Processing Development in Vanuatu funded by United Nations Industry Development Organizations (UNIDO)

Duration: 2017-2018

Location: Vanuatu

Activities: two on-site field missions were conducted by CBRC experts to formulate Vanuatu bamboo development strategy. Training workshops on bamboo furniture and curtain production was organized locally. Samples of bamboo products were shipped to raise the public awareness of bamboo industry.

Results: local technicians were well trained in bamboo workshops. A development strategy of bamboo industry was formulated.

Highlights: Bamboo product exhibition has been done to have a far-reaching impact.

4. China Provides Brazil with Bamboo Cultivation and High-efficient Utilization Technology, funded by Ministry of Science and Technology of China..

Duration: 2016-2018

Location: Brazil

Activities: introduced 3 superior bamboo species to Brazil for shoot consumption and timber utilization; demonstrative bamboo nurseries and plantations set up; training workshops both in Brazil and in China conducted.

Results: Cultivation technology of indigenous bamboo species in Brazil formulated; pilot bamboo shoot processing line established; demonstrative bamboo plantations built; personnel exchange visits and training workshops in both countries for Brazilian technicians.

Highlights: Professor Ding Xingcui of CBRC attended the 2nd China-Brazil Dialogue on High-level Scientific Innovation in Brazil and made a presentation titled “China-Brazil Joint R&D in Green Bamboo Industry” which was well received by Brazilian side. This project is a follow-up of MOU on China-Brazil bamboo industry cooperation signed by Ministers of Science and Technology of both countries.
