Summary of Projects and Achievements
Freshwater Fisheries Research Center of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences (FFRC) is the FAO（the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations）Reference Centre for Aquaculture and Inland Fisheries Research and Training, the regional leading center of the Network of Aquaculture Centers in Asia-Pacific (NACA), and the Asian-Pacific Regional Research and Training Centre for Integrated Fish Farming (IFFC). Its main SSC activities include:
Education and Training
Since 1981 FFRC has organized over 180 international technical training courses and seminars in fishery and aquaculture. Over 4,980 senior fisheries technical and managerial personnel from 134 countries and regions have been trained. Meanwhile the center recruits over 110 overseas postgraduate and doctoral students. The programs of human resource development and cooperation contributed to the transfer of Chinese advanced aquaculture techniques and matured experiences of fishery industry development to vast development countries, and the establishment of platform of follow-up cooperation in fishery between China and other developing countries.
Meanwhile, FFRC has been actively sending fishery experts to vast developing countries for providing technical assistance and training. Since 2011, over 80 experts from FFRC have been dispatched to over 40 countries, such as Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Malawi, Argentina, Brazil, etc. as technical consultants in fishery and aquaculture. These experts contributed more to improving aquaculture technique and promoting fishery industry development in participating countries.
Major SSTC Projects
1. Aquaculture Technical Demonstration Center in South Africa
FRC experts trained 165 fishery technicians and officers, and produced 50,000 good quality fingerlings of tilapia and catfish for South Africa;
2. Rice-fish farms in Myanmar
With support from South-South Cooperation project, FFRC established 2 standardized rice-fish farms in Myanmar, which achieved high economic, ecological and social benefit.
